Skipper won’t get too excited about Sefton Park’s bright start

Paul Horton is not getting ahead of himself – but he’s happy with Sefton Park’s start to the season.

They are the only side outside the Premier Division to go played two, won two.

And while that may owe something to a soggy start to the season, Horton is pleased to have something to build on.

The former Lancashire man said: “It is very early days but we’re happy to have got two games in and we played really well.

“It’s good to get two early wins, but there’s a long season to go.

“We won the toss and bowled in the first game but we lost the toss on Saturday.

“We weren’t sure what the wicket would be like but we’ve been happy with the way we played and we were able to knock off the runs. It’s nice to start with a few wins.”

Six-wicket wins at St Helens Town and Fleetwood Hesketh were built on the back of strong team bowling performances.

Five bowlers have contributed between three and six wickets, with Peter Kelly’s left-arm spin adding to an already strong seam unit.

A real team effort…

Horton added: “We had quite a long bowling order last year – we’ve lost Leo Spilsbury, but we’ve got a bit more depth with Peter Kelly.

“Our seamers have done well in the first couple of games, we were always good with the ball last year, it’s more about scoring enough runs.”

The season finally arrives at Croxteth Drive on Saturday with the visit of Spring View, last season’s third-placed side.

They started with a win over Old Xaverians, and Horton knows they will pose a tough challenge.

“Spring View are a very good team with two very good spinners,” he added.

“We wouldn’t have been able to host a game in the first couple of weeks, we’re not sure what the surface will be like and the outfield will be a little bit heavy too.

“But we’ve got three in a row at home, so if we get some good weather then hopefully we can just keep getting better and better.”
